Mileage Discrepancy

line-of-carsMileage discrepancies on the NMR

When you carry out a NMR check with Cartell, you MUST enter the exact mileage as shown on the odometer of the vehicle at the time you carry out the check. This mileage is then verified against the NMR to see if there are any discrepancies. The NMR will return one of 5 results based on the mileage you enter. These are:

  • ‘Not Checked’ – As no odometer reading was supplied a mileage check on the National Mileage Register has not been carried out
  • ‘No Discrepancy’ – The National Mileage Register does not contain any records which would indicate a mileage discrepancy. Not every vehicle is listed on the NMR and you should always obtain the full service history. You may also consult the manufacturer to verify mileage readings
  • ‘Previous Discrepancy’ – Previous mileage readings held in the National Mileage Register may contain an inconsistency. Please contact Cartell for further information
  • ‘Possible Discrepancy’– The National Mileage Register contains data that may indicate a mileage inconsistency. Please contact Cartell for further information
  • ‘Discrepancy Found’ – The National Mileage Register contains data that is inconsistent with your mileage. Please contact Cartell for further information

For the UK NMR check, we have 5 results also. These are slightly different:

  • ‘Not Checked’– As no odometer reading was supplied a mileage check on the National Mileage Register has not been carried out
  • ‘No mileage discrepancy is currently indicated by the National Mileage Register’ – the mileage you have entered appears consistent with any other mileage readings held by HPI.
  • ‘Data currently held on the National Mileage Register indicates that there may be a mileage discrepancy on this vehicle’ – these discrepancies could indicate that the vehicle has been ‘clocked’. It is in your best interest to investigate the mileage readings and dates using Service History, MOT’s and any others documents associated with the vehicle to satisfy yourself the mileage readings are acceptable. Contact Cartell if you require further assistance.
  • ‘The mileage you have entered is inconsistent with other data currently held on the National Mileage Register’ – there is a difference between the mileage you have provided and other data held on the NMR in the UK, which suggests the figure you have provided may be incorrect. If the mileage figure you have supplied is incorrect please contact Cartell with the correct mileage reading. If the mileage is correct it is in your best interest to investigate the mileage readings and dates using Service History, NCT’s and any others documents associated with the vehicle.
  • ‘Data currently held on the National Mileage Register indicates that this vehicle may have been subject to an odometer change’ – there are a number of legitimate reasons for replacing odometers, but you should be aware that the vehicle has probably covered more miles than are currently indicated.
